My one little word for 2017 is do. Certainly a very little word, but mighty I think. This is year three for me to participate in choosing a word to represent my year. Although that is a bit of a strong description, it’s more like a mantra I suppose. My first two words were gratitude and brave. They were fitting for those particular years in my life and showed up how I expected them to (especially gratitude) but the words also surprised me by revealing themselves in a new perspective (more so with brave).
This year the word create was a strong contender and somewhat goes hand in hand with the word do. As in create the life you want to live, but do seemed to speak louder in the sense of do what needs to be done. Towards the end of last year I read The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson and what really stuck with me was the quote “Do the thing and you shall have the power” by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Olson points out that Nike gives it to us in more simple words Just Do It.
Going back to create, this year I want to be more creative. I want to write more, I want to make things with my hands, I want to read more. These are things I crave. I also want to be healthier and finally reach my goal weight. As the New Year approached I began thinking about what I wanted 2017 to look like (I do this every year, I love setting goals, writing them down, and seeing how things turn out at the end of the year) and the word Do came to me. And so it clicked into place.
I’ve somewhat recently converted over to Bullet Journaling (LOVE!) and on a fresh page I wrote my one little word DO at the top in a bold hand. Here’s what I jotted down underneath:
“Do the thing and you shall have the power.”
Be like Nike and “Just Do It.”
Do make time
- for your marriage
- for your kids
- to write (!)
- to be crafty
- to read
- to excercise
- to feed yourself well
- for self care
- to rest
- to say yes
- to say no
- to live the life you want
Do pray. Do spend time with God.
Do things that make you happy. Do things that might be hard but can help you grow.
“I don’t know how to do this, but I’m going to do it anyway”
Do the damn thing.
